Wild Weekend in NYC for LBJ's Great Grandkids

Some 31 people were shot in New York City between early Saturday and early Monday—part of a 24-hour run of shooting victims.

Public schooling, escalating minimum wage laws and the encouragement of fatherless families, were all  things  intensified under LBJ's  "Great Society" program and "War on Poverty". They have made for a mad cocktail of out of control kids.

By the end of the Johnson Administration, 226 out of 252 major legislative requests (over a four-year period) had been met, Federal Aid to the poor rose from $9.9 billion in 1960 to $30 billion.

President Johnson's first ever public reference to the 'Great Society' took place during a speech to students on May 7, 1964, at Ohio University. "And with your courage and with your compassion and your desire, we will build the Great Society. It is a Society where no child will go unfed, and no youngster will go unschooled."

Economist Thomas Sowell  explained in 2004 what LBJ's programs did:
August 20th marks the 40th anniversary of one of the major turning points in American social history. That was the date on which President Lyndon Johnson signed legislation creating his "War on Poverty" program in 1964.
Never had there been such a comprehensive program to tackle poverty at its roots, to offer more opportunities to those starting out in life, to rehabilitate those who had fallen by the wayside, and to make dependent people self-supporting. Its intentions were the best. But we know what road is paved with good intentions.
In the liberal vision, slums bred crime. But brand-new government housing projects almost immediately became new centers of crime and quickly degenerated into new slums. Many of these projects later had to be demolished. Unfortunately, the assumptions behind those projects were not demolished, but live on in other disastrous programs...The black family, which had survived centuries of slavery and discrimination, began rapidly disintegrating in the liberal welfare state that subsidized unwed pregnancy and changed welfare from an emergency rescue to a way of life.
Government has no clue as to how to raise kids, find them jobs, educate them or house them. It is a myth designed to further justify tax increases. Government has done nothing but create the most violent, gun-toting, out-of-control kids in the history of mankind.

It is time to ditch government "help" in the raising of children, that needs to be returned to the private charity level and the family level. Further, minimum wage laws need to be abolished so these kids can get jobs and learn basic skills. Otherwise, LBJ's great grandkids will be toting more guns and we will all end up ducking for cover, from time to time.

  1. Sowell's comments remind me of the following:

A few years ago Massachusetts threatened to cut welfare benefits to poor women with children and no husbands.

They sparked a riot at the state capital. Hundreds of uneducated, poor women - many with no teeth, overweight, etc. - almost tore up the place.

The majority of these women were WHITE - not black.

The moral of the story is there are more POOR WHITE folks on welfare than poor blacks.

The statistics bear this fact out.

So your LBJ kids' story has a racial undertone that I frankly find demeaning to many of my black friends - and to your readers in general.

  3. Hey Anonymous 105pm: Where did Wenzel say anything about race? He didn't. As far as the quote of the great Thomas Sowell goes, he's black himself, and therefore unlikely to be anti-black. He is simply pointing out the well-known destruction of intact black communities that existed before the welfare state destroyed them. Even if you're correct that more white people than black are dependent on the state, and you may well be right, the point is precisely the same: welfare dependency destroys communities and reduces people who otherwise would be proudly industrious and independent to people that are dependent and lost.

  4. A state that disarms its citizens encourages shooting galleries. Armed citizens deter crime faster and more efficiently than eliminating minimum wage laws. New York is notoriously in favor of victim disarmament.

  5. According to Walter Williams in _The State against Blacks_ the minimum wage has disproportionately favored white workers since its inception. This issue needs to be studied carefully, as Walter Williams argues it has kept young blacks from getting work that would have helped raise them up.

According to Thomas Sowell, in more than one book, he argues that welfare has not benefited the black community, but destroyed it. He states:

"The assumption that spending more of the taxpayers’ money will make things better has survived all kinds of evidence that it has made things worse. The black family—which survived slavery, discrimination, poverty, wars and depressions—began to come apart as the federal government moved in with its well-financed programs to “help.""

Michelle Alexander in her book, _The New Jim Crow_ carefully shows that the drug war is entirely about keeping the inner city, especially *blacks* under control and demoralized.

So here is how modern *color-blind* racism works:

First, you take away the jobs (via the minimum wage.)
Second, you demoralize by making these individuals dependent on handouts (via welfare.)
Third, then you keep these individuals in line (via the drug war.)

Read the writers, Walter William, Thomas Sowell, Michelle Alexander. Do your homework.

Individuals who happen to have black skin should be more than enraged by all this, yet who keeps voting for it again and again? No wonder people have tried to smear Ron Paul as a racist, because if anyone one should be voting him, it's individuals who have been put down merely because of the color of their skin.

Fight back and vote for Ron Paul, dammit! If your reading this, educate yourself, then spread the word.

  6. LBJ grandkids means those addicted to entitlement programs. Who says they have to be black?

Since you brought up race though, of course there probably are more whites technically on welfare because blacks are about what, 1/10 of the population? Just like for murder crime stats and prison stats though, blacks are overrepresented far, far more times compared to their population.

These numbers all drastically shot up as soon as the LBJ programs took over, so it is a perfect example of the evils of our drug and welfare laws. The American Indians on Reservations are in even worse shape because they have had even more government dependence.

  7. @Anon 1:05 pm:

Quit looking at total numbers and focus more on the proportion of the black population on welfare compared to the proportion of the white population on welfare. Also, the welfare state has been destructive to the black community. Look at what the effects of the levees failing in New Orleans had during Katrina. Those poor people depended on the government for everything, included the safety of their lives, and how did that turn out for them?

  8. Numbers have been revised...hard to keep count when so many are falling..

"Updated statistics obtained by NBC New York on Tuesday show that at least 67 people were shot between 12 a.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday. That includes nine on Friday, 10 on Saturday, 33 on Sunday and 15 on Monday."

"Preliminary numbers indicate as many as 10 were killed."

  9. Here's the thing. Think about being an inner-city kid today. It's hard to imagine what in the hell you could do to make things work out well. Your entire future has, quite literally, been handed to rich people right down the street. People have the audacity to refer to poor kids as welfare-addicts, dependent, spoiled, demanding handouts, etc.? These comments are much more appropriately applied to the stock brokers enjoying their highest earnings ever, off of money stolen from others.

Maybe the inner-city kid should work hard, get a scholarship, and go to college. Then he can owe money to that same banker down the road, and still not get a job.

Then you wonder why the kids are angry and doing irrational things?

  10. Puzzled, you nailed it. The real welfare addicts wear $5,000 suits and are driven in new Mercedes to their $10,000 dinners.

These kids, while nihilist thugs and no benefit to society, are victims of the crony capitalist state. We all are.
