HOT: US Commander of Nato Forces in Afghanistan is Going Down in Petraeus Scandal

Developing....

UPDATE

WaPo is reporting:

The FBI has found between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of  "potentially inappropriate" e-mails between Gen. John R. Allen and Jill Kelley, the 37-year-old Tampa woman allegedly threatened by David Petraeus’s mistress.

UPDATE 2

Via WaPo:

The FBI first notified the Pentagon of its investigation into Allen’s communications with Kelley on Sunday evening, according to the senior defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss details of the ongoing case.

In response, Pentagon chief Leon E. Panetta referred the investigation to the Defense Department’s Inspector General for further review, according to a statement released by Panetta early Tuesday as he was traveling to Australia...

In his statement, Panetta said Allen would remain as commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan for now, “while the matter is under investigation and before the facts are determined.”

But his time there may be short. Panetta has also asked the Senate to expedite the confirmation of his likely successor, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford.

Obama had nominated Dunford last month to replace Allen...

The senior defense official said the voluminous collection of emails sent between Allen and Kelley occurred between 2010 and this year, but did not give details. The official also declined to say whether Allen sent or received any of the messages from his military or government email accounts, or if classified material was compromised.

  1. 20k-30k PAGES of emails? How many games of solitaire did the guy play? Not much soldiering to do in Afghanistan, I suppose.

  5. Kelley is an operator.

I don't know Allen. Do know Petraeus.

This is just the beginning of the purge.

More confirmation to come in the next 8-12 weeks.

  6. These are standard reindeer games for General Officers - and many unscrupulous field grades.

The cute wives and/or subordinates are often expected to sleep with the boss.

This has been common knowledge since Ike and his assistant.

It is breaking now because it is being used to perform a purge.

The purge is happening, because there are some things even some G.O.s won't do...

...And someone wants to do those things without interference from the military.

Those not purged but dirty will remain because they can be controlled.

Those not purged and not dirty will be passed over and retired.

These events are occurring because some gov't elephants share the views reflected in the 2009 DHS intelligence report citing military as 'potential rightwing extremists'.

Whatever policy options these people want, they don't want substantial potentially armed interference to be possible, and they believe some in the military would offer such interference.

I have no knowledge of these policy options. And so I have no knowledge whether those attempting to shape the current and future military leadership are correct in their views...

I am simply observing the overt signs.

  9. You can't work your way up to those sort of positions without being an amoral psychopath. We are just lucky that his dysfunctions were minor compared to what they could have been. Of course, I could be wrong -- there could be more.
