HARVARD: Gun Control Does Not Lead to Less Violent Crime

A Harvard Study titled "Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?" looks at figures for "intentional deaths" throughout continental Europe and juxtaposes them with the U.S. to show that more gun control does not necessarily lead to lower death rates or violent crime, reports Breitbart.

Breitbart continues:
Because the findings so clearly demonstrate that more gun laws may in fact increase death rates, the study says that "the mantra that more guns mean more deaths and that fewer guns, therefore, mean fewer deaths" is wrong.
For example, when the study shows numbers for Eastern European gun ownership and corresponding murder rates, it is readily apparent that less guns to do not mean less death. In Russia, where the rate of gun ownership is 4,000 per 100,000 inhabitants, the murder rate was 20.52 per 100,000 in 2002. That same year in Finland, where the rater of gun ownership is exceedingly higher--39,000 per 100,000--the murder rate was almost nill, at 1.98 per 100,000.[...]The murder rate in Russia, where handguns are banned, is 30.6; the rate in the U.S. is 7.8.

And this doesn't take into consideration the mass killing of unarmed Jews by Hitler's soldiers and unarmed Kulaks in the Soviet Union.

  4. From an objective viewpoint, comparing the behavior of people living in Russia to those in Finland is a Sparrows to Hawks analogy. The baseline would be skewed to start with. At least adjust for overall crime rates in the two countries. Did they?

  6. No study can really prove anything other than a correlation that they are looking to find. However, I remember Sarah Brady and the gun control groups screaming back in the 90s that if states allowed conceal carry laws to pass, the crime and murder rate would explode. The premise was that more guns equaled more crime, but we saw the exAct opposite happen. Why were the gun banning groups so wrong?

The CSGV was saying as large as last year that more guns equaled more crime, but they have lost that debate so badly that recently they admitted no gun control laws can affect crime other than bg checks! What a mighty shift from a decade ago when they were advocating banning all privately held firearms just like Sarah Brady was!

  7. The studies conducted by Harvard are usually pretty accurate and use sound research methodology. It certainly adds to the argument that there is little correlation between gun ownership and gun violence.

  8. WHAT ABOUT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ARE RUN DOWN , OVER OR KILLED DUE TO AUTOS, OTHER THAN CRASHES AND WRECKS? IT IS THE PERSON,PEOPLE. GUNS ARE AS SAFE AS ELECTRICITY, WATER AND BREATHING. IT IS THE ATTITUDE OF THE PUBLIC,AND THE DYNAMICS THAT CREATE THE CRIMINAL ELEMENT. THE ONLY ISSUE OF SOCIETY TOWARDS GUNS IS THE SYSTEMS OF GOVERNMENTS CONTROL. MAN HAS WORKED AROUND THE 2ND AMENDMENT TO ALLOW WHAT EVER GROUP OR GOVERNMENT TO DO WHAT THEY WANT. I FEEL THAT SOME LIMIT OF MEASURE IS NEEDED BUT I'M AFFRAID THAT THE CAT IS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE BAG. GIVE ME ONE HAND GUN AND A SHOOT GUN FOR PROTECTION, HUNTING AND RECREATION WITH IN LIMITS. THEN HOLD THE LINE. FOR BIG GAME HUNTERS, ONE RIFLE OF LIMITED CAL. AND POWER, WITH A REGISTERTRATION IN PLACE. LIMIT ON # OF ROUNDS ALLOWED. FOR THOSE THAT WANT TO SHOOT LARGER WEAPONS AND SUCH, JOIN THE ARMY,MARIENS,OR JOIN A GOV. CONTROLED SHOOTING CLUB THAT OWNS THESE WEAPONS AND SUPERVISES USE AND SAFETY.
