Pro-War, WSJ Op-Ed Writer Elizabeth O’Bagy Fired for Lying about Having a Ph. D.

The Syria researcher whose Wall Street Journal op-piece was cited by Secretary of State John Kerry and Sen. John McCain during congressional hearings about the use of force has been fired from the Institute for the Study of War for lying about having a Ph.D., the group announced on Wednesday, reports Politico.

The institute said in a statement:
The Institute for the Study of War has learned and confirmed that, contrary to her representations, Ms. Elizabeth O'Bagy does not in fact have a Ph.D. degree from Georgetown University. ISW has accordingly terminated Ms. O'Bagy's employment, effective immediately.

According to Politico,  O’Bagy’s Aug. 30 op-ed piece for WSJ, “On the Front Lines of Syria’s Civil War,” was cited by both John Kerry and Johm McCain last week. McCain read from the piece last Tuesday to Kerry, calling it “an important op-ed by Dr. Elizabeth O’Bagy.” The next day, Kerry also brought up the piece before a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing and described it as a “very interesting article” and recommended that members read it.

    1. Exactly. I saw her on C-Span last week and I could not believe that anyone would even listen to her as an authority on this matter. She is far too young with little to no real world experience. To top it off, she was not very articulate.

    2. Because she has spent more time on the ground in Syria and researching it in her short 26 years than almost anyone else in the US.

    3. She has never been to Syria. She lied. She was in Turkey with terrorists. So much for your remarks, Anonymous. Long live secular Syria.

  2. HAHAHAHA. Too rich. I'm sure everything else was very truthful also. She claims to have traveled extensively with the rebel forces. What exactly the hell does that mean. I'd like to know. Either this woman has balls of steel or she is lying though her teeth.

  5. To confirm for yourself, one can call Georgetown School of Foreign Service to check if she is enrolled, or if she finished her Ph.D. degree. Over 75% of the Ph.D. candidates never finish- and this is after over 7 years of graduate school -doctoral studies, Full-time. Therefore, ANY Ph.D. degrees should be confirmed on the website, University of Michigan-Proquest, a recognized archive of US Ph.D. degrees since 1935 or so
