Murray Sabrin Urges Supreme Court to Defend Rights of Americans to Think and Believe

"The freedom to think and believe as you wish was on trial yesterday before the U.S. Supreme Court, and I fear for its survival," said U.S. Senate candidate Murray Sabrin. "That the issue is even being debated in this country shows how deeply our liberties have been eroded by the growth of government, and I urge the Court to stand on the side of freedom."

Sabrin was referring to the arguments before the Court in what is popularly called "The Hobby Lobby Case." Hobby Lobby, a national chain of craft stores, is owned by a family of evangelical Christians who object to certain mandates in the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, that require it to provide a panoply of birth-control options, including the Plan B "morning after" pill, that they regard as tantamount to abortion. Hobby Lobby has no problem providing most other birth control options through its employer-paid health insurance plan.

Hobby Lobby is joined in the litigation by Conestoga Wood Specialties, a firm owned by devout Mennonites - the Green family who own Hobby Lobby are Southern Baptists - who have similar objections to the Obamacare mandates.

"I may not subscribe to the religious beliefs of the owners of either Hobby Lobby or Conestoga Wood Specialties, but that's not the point," Sabrin said. "What is important is that their freedom to run a business according to the dictates of their conscience is being shredded by big government and bullying bureaucrats."

"On this issue, we're all Baptists and we're all Mennonites," he said. "If other faiths come under similar attack, then we'll be with them too."

"And this is only the beginning," he said. "During oral arguments, Justice Samuel Alito, a son of New Jersey,  asked whether kosher and halal ritual practices could be outlawed by the government as inhumane just as they recently have been in Denmark, and that hits this son of Holocaust survivors right at home."

"What's next - outlawing circumcision or forbidding the right of religiously-oriented parents to send their children to parochial school?" Sabrin asked.

"Having the government and bureaucrats tell us what to think or what to believe has got to stop," he said. "But it won't stop while President Obama is in power and Cory Booker is our state's U.S. senator because they're both fine with it."

"In the meantime, not a single one of my primary opponents has taken a position on the issue," Sabrin said. "On the core issue of the right of Americans to think and believe, I'm the one out in front of the issue providing the only leadership to be seen or heard."

"The Supreme Court is supposed to protect the rights of Americans when they're attacked by the government," he said. "This isn't the first time in U.S. history that religiously-inspired rights came under siege from the oppressive hand of the state, and sadly and as long as we continue to allow the big hand of government to smother our rights it won't be the last."

"When nationally known legal scholars like former Bush administration solicitor general Ken Starr and Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz are of one mind on an issue you have to sit up and take notice," Sabrin said. "Usually, they're at opposite ends of the opinion-spectrum, but here they both see our Bill of Rights and the freedoms it is supposed to secure under a grave threat."

"It's clear the right of conscience has long been under attack in this country, and it's my fervent hope that the good people of Hobby Lobby  and Conestoga get the justice to which they're entitled under our Constitution."

  2. While i applaud HL for doing whatever it can to defend it's property rights from government intrusion, i don't think it's fair to make exceptions to laws based on religion, or any criteria. If the law is so arbitrary that it's no big deal to make exceptions for certain people because they believe certain things or any criteria, then it shouldn't be a law.

I have a deeply held belief in the sanctity of property rights. Can i get an exemption on all taxes and regulation?
