Company In Which Joe Biden's Son Is Director Prepares To Drill Shale Gas In East Ukraine

Imagine my surprise.

Back in May, Burisma Holdings announced that the son of Vice-President Joe Biden, R. Hunter Biden, had become a member of the Board of Directors of the firm. At the time, he said (my emphasis)
Burisma’s track record of innovation and industry leadership in the field of natural gas means that it can be a strong driver of a strong economy in Ukraine. As a new member of the Board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the Company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine.
From the companies web site:
Burisma is a private oil and gas company operating in Ukraine. Having started in 2002, the Company has grown rapidly to become one of Ukraine’s largest independent gas producers, with licences covering the country’s three key hydrocarbon basins, including Dnieper-Donets, Carpathian and Azov-Kuban. In September 2013, Burisma had average daily production of 10.5 ths boepd.

Dnieper-Donets is in eastern Ukraine as is the Azov–Kuban Basin.

ITAR-TASS News Agency reports that, even as the fighting is going on, Burisma is preparing to drill shale gas, with the protection of Ukraine national military:
Ukrainian troopers help installing shale gas production equipment near the east Ukrainian town of Slavyansk, which they bombed and shelled for the three preceding months, the Novorossiya news agency reports on its website citing local residents.
“Civilians protected by Ukrainian army are getting ready to install drilling rigs. More equipment is being brought in,” they said, adding that the military are encircling the future extraction area."
