El Niño Could Mean Heavy Snow by the End of October in Colorado

An El Niño of the current scope, measured by water temperature and wind direction, hasn't been seen since 1997-98, says Klaus Wolter, a University of Colorado Boulder climatologist. He believes this could be the third strongest since 1900, after the events of '97-'98 and '82-'83.

Colorado could see a mixed bag of weather events from now through next spring — including a strong possibility of snow by the end of this month, Wolter says.

In Colorado Springs, 19.9 inches of snow fell in October 1997, the third highest recorded total in the city for a month, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

That included 13.9 inches of snow that fell on Oct. 25, 1997, the most recorded in an October day in the city’s history.
