Proof That a College Degree is Officially the New High School Diploma

Jillian Berman writes:

Some 36% of workers have a bachelor’s degree or higher compared with 34% with a high school diploma or less, according to a study released Thursday by Georgetown University’s Center for Education and the Workforce. The milestone is years in the making, said Anthony Carnevale, the director of the center. Beginning in the early 1980s, the American economy began to shift from one where a high-school diploma was enough to get a decent job to one where at least some college is required...

But, “What young people need to understand is that the point is not to go to college, this is not about your degree, this is about your field of study,” Carnevale said.

RW note: Of course, this analysis doesn't apply if you are a rugged individual and willing to cut your own path--no matter how difficult ever-growing government regulations make that path.

  1. If only today's college degree meant as much as a high school diploma used to mean.

But Robert is right; the future belongs to the autodidacts.
