I was just looking at info on the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences which picks the winner for economics. The wikipedia page doesn't even list economics as a discipline, unless it falls under Social Sciences. It appears that candidates will likely end up coming from tenured professors at Universities, with the Universities in the Scandinavian countries likely being highly politicized due the prevalent political correctness present in those countries. Then, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences picks from the nominees. I'm not sure if that academy has an economist on board. I didn't feel like going thru the member list to check.
