Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to Stand Trial Over Campaign Financing

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been ordered to stand trial for allegedly breaking campaign financing rules in his failed bid for reelection in 2012.

An investigating magistrate ordered Sarkozy 3 to stand trial after a year-long investigation for “illegal financing of an election campaign for having surpassed as a candidate, the legal ceiling for election spending.”

Sarkozy ignored warnings that he would break campaign spending limits and spent €20 million over the €22.51 million ceiling, according to investigators.

The investigating magistrate also ordered another 13 people to stand trial as part of the investigation into the financing of the 2012 campaign.
