Uber Self-Driving Car Involved in Car Crash

A self-driving car operated by Uber was involved in a crash in Tempe, Arizona.

In a photo posted on Twitter, one of Uber’s Volvo self-driving SUVs is pictured on its side next to another car with dents and smashed windows. An Uber spokeswoman confirmed the incident, and the veracity of the photo, in an email to Bloomberg News.

According to ABC 15, a car failed to yield to the autonomous SUV and hit it, authorities said. The self-driving SUV rolled onto its side as a result crash.

No injuries were reported. Police said there was one passenger in the self-driving car.

  1. This is close to ASU. I see these self-driving user SUVs around there all the time. Yesterday, I saw four of them go by while waiting in a left turn lane.

It could be entirely the other drivers fault, but I wonder if defensive driving is a problem for them. We all try to anticipate what other cars will do and change our driving accordingly. I wonder if this is a problem for them.

  2. So, out of all those Uber cars, ONE gets in an accident, no one was hurt, and the OTHER car was at fault. Why is this news?

  3. I don't think driverless cars are definitively a good thing. There are many instances when, as a driver, I need to break a rule to ensure my or someone else's well being: going up an icy hill and blowing through a stop sign when there is no traffic coming, avoiding a head-on collision by driving on the wrong side of the street, rolling through a red light when a large truck is coming up from your rear and is out of control, ignoring traffic rules when rushing someone to the emergency room, etc. Human discretion and judgment is important in these instances.

Plus, the more automated and network-connected the car, the more the state can keep tabs on where you're going, stop you from going there or restrict your general driving (e.g., CA and WA are looking to reduce miles driven by residents, and this would be a very easy way to do so).
