  1. It was actually a tax cut, the Tea Act of 1773, which triggered a chain of events resulting in that politically violent state creating revolution. That law made the cost of tea from the East India Company cheaper than the smuggled Dutch tea then used throughout the colonies. When a delivery of it was destroyed in Boston Harbor, Britain responded with the Coercive Acts against the colony of Massachusetts, which was then used to stir up support for a war for independence. This isn’t to suggest Britain didn’t have mercantilist policies on the colonies.
