George Orwell's Review Of Hayek's 'Road to Serfdom'

This is fascinating.

Orwell gets Hayek but he doesn't get free markets.

Here.

  1. Leftists and socialists are hilarious when it comes to vocabulary.

They always combine cronyism (between big business and governments) with free markets and refer to that as Capitalism. They never seem to want to acknowledge that in a monopoly, there always seems to be help from the government. Oliver Stone misses this repeatedly in his South of the Border Documentary.

On the other hand, if you ask them about the failure of socialism in any of the multitude of countries where it's been tried, they name that country's system something else! "No, that wasn't socialism! That was Stalinism, which was a despotic version of socialism! I'm advocating the good kind!"

    1. I laughed out loud at "They always combine cronyism (between big business and governments) with free markets and refer to that as Capitalism."

Orwell understood monopoly in an instinctive way and if he were around to see it compared to 1944 his assessment would be entertaining to say the least. It would be a hoot to see what he would say about reduced competition stealth inflation.
