U.S. Orders Diplomats’ Families to Leave Venezuela

File under: A socialist crack-up

The United States has ordered the families of diplomats and other employees at the embassy in Caracas to leave Venezuela ahead of a high-stakes election in the country. U.S. diplomats are permitted to leave the country if they choose to do so. Political unrest and violence have resulted in more than 100 deaths over the past four months. Venezuelans are voting Sunday on whether to begin re-writing the country’s constitution, and the U.S. has urged President Nicolas Maduro to scrap the election over allegations that it was designed to keep him in power. The State Department has advised Americans against traveling to Venezuela due to social unrest, violent crime, and pervasive food and medicine shortages.
