REPORT National Economic Adviser to Leave the White House

National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn is expected to resign his position shortly in the White House after the president and his economic team return from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, later this month, several administration sources told Newsmax.

According to Newsmax, Cohn's likely successor is Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.

This would be a disaster. If Trump is a  neanderthal when it comes to economics, Ross is a Compsognathus brain. He is a mercantilist protectionist of the dumbest sort, but he would have major influence over Trump.  As Newsmax notes, Ross is widely considered among Trump's closest friends in the Cabinet.

There is one glimmer of hope though. Indications are that Larry Kudlow remains in the running for NEC. Larry wouldn't be perfect but, in addition to being a class act, he is a free trader. He would strongly oppose Trump's protectionist inclinations. The opposite of what Ross would do.

The pick to replace Cohn will be big. It could signal how open trade will be in the United States for years.
