Since you posted about collecting nickels, I've made a point to go to the ATM and start paying with cash more for my daily purchases (coffee from Dunkin Donuts). When I come home, I sort my change into four jars: one for nickels, one for pre-82 pennies, one for post-82 pennies and one for dimes and quarters. I don't expect to get rich off of this, but I have found that it is a great way to save money in general as well as prepare for the future with some solid supplies of copper.
It's also a fun conversation starter when you're overheard asking for your change to be "in all nickels, please."
I went to the bank and got $500 in nickels one time. I actually called ahead and they ordered the nickels and deducted the $500 from my account. They thought I was crazy...maybe I am.
I save the nickels I get in change, but I can't see myself buying them in bulk. The value-to-weight ratio just isn't high enough. Now if this was 1964, and we were talking silver quarters....
J M Schmidt, I would love to see the look on the face of the cashiers that you encounter on a day-to-day basis.
