Cato Shrugged Opens Center to "Challenge" Fed
The Cato Institute has announced that it is opening "a new research center that its president says will fundamentally challenge the central bank and its monetary policy."
So just how is Cato going to "challenge" the Fed?
Apparently by giving away the game and assuming that it is a good idea that the Fed should be manipulating the money supply and interest rates in the first place.
The Washington Examiner reports:
Cato scholars will weigh in on the topics confronting monetary policy makers, such as how the Fed should move back toward normal monetary policy after amassing a $4.5 trillion balance sheet while trying to boost the economy in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis.
They also will work in their capacity as a libertarian think tank to affect legislative efforts relating to the Fed, such as a recent effort by House Republicans to require Fed officials such as Chairwoman Janet Yellen to compare their monetary decisions to those that would have followed from a simple monetary policy rule.If you ever want to show someone an excellent example of why you should never trust Beltarians, this new attempt by Cato to "challenge" the Fed is it.
The Fed shouldn't be moving back toward any "normal" Fed policy, The Fed has been a disaster since it started. (SEE; The Fed Flunks). It should be ended.
Further, "a simple monetary policy rule," is simply a method to determine the degree of money inflation. It is simply an absurd concept promoted by government apologists, that allows cronies manipulating the government and the government, itself, to get their hands on newly printed money before others do. That's why the gap is growing between the super-wealthy and the rest of us (SEE:The Bottom 90 Percent: No Better Off Today Than in 1986).
Bottom line: Any Fed money printing is criminal activity.
And what does George Selgin, the new head of the Cato monetary center, say about this money printing criminality:
Selgin added that monetary policy rules that predictably set the value of the dollar are “reasonable compromises” short of his preference of ending the Fed.Yes, another Beltarian, who "theoretically" wants to shrink government, but on a practical value considers it a "reasonable compromise," that it should continue to rob the people. This is just what the crony elitists love, inside the Beltway technocrats that couch their advocacy of continued government interventions in libertarian wrapping to confuse and dilute the libertarian message.

New York Times propagandist David Brooks wants Americans to "snap out of it". Life has never been better, especially in New York City:

Didn't you listen to Defense Secretary Hagel? He said: "ISIL poses a threat greater than 9/11. ISIL is as sophisticated and well funded as any group we have seen. They're beyond just a terrorist group. They marry ideology with a sophisticated strategic and tactical military prowess and they're tremendously well-funded. This is way beyond anything we have seen. We must prepare for everything. Get Ready! ... They are an imminent threat to every interest we have."
Former CIA Director, Leon Panetta says: "I think we're looking at kind of a 30-year war."
30 (more) years???
So which is it Brooks? Pickup trucks? Or the scariest thing to ever walk the Earth?
I guess Americans are supposed to be afraid enough to let the war machine conduct forever wars, but not so afraid that they lose sight of the fact that things have never been better. Give a blank check to the Empire, and go take a yoga class to relax.
And while you're doing your Camel Pose, and relaxing your mind, don't you dare contemplate thoughts of real Liberty:

"Infamy" And Pearl Harbor

In 1887, Hawaiian King Kalakaua granted the U.S. exclusive rights to use Pearl Harbor as a "coaling and repair station".
King Kalakaua happened to have a very observant sister, named Liliuokalani, who wrote in her diary that the granting to the U.S. of these exclusive rights was “a day of infamy in Hawaiian history”.
Four years later, King Kalakaua passed away, and his sister Liliuokalani would rule Hawaii as Queen.
Long story short (and I recommend the long story in Stephen Kinzer's book "Overthrow") Queen Liliuokalani would be deposed just 2 years later, in 1893, by the United States.
Was Liliuokalani right, or what? Her brother let the camel's nose under the tent, and just two years later, the whole camel was inside.
Not only was granting the U.S. exclusive rights to Pearl Harbor “a day of infamy in Hawaiian history,” but it was the same in American history as well. It would lead to the overthrow of the Queen of Hawaii, and the first taste of the poisonous fruit of Empire for the Americans.
That poison would circulate through the veins so strongly, that five years later, the next (and much more powerful dose) would be consumed with the Spanish-American war.
The seeds of the Empire that we see today, were now burrowed in the ground.
Interestingly enough, Pearl Harbor would receive pivotal attention once again in 1941 with the Japanese attack. FDR chose to describe the day in a manner that sounded very similar to Queen Liliuokalani's diary. FDR said that Dec. 7, 1941 would be "a date which will live in infamy".
Was the choice of words a coincidence?

On Today's Edition of The State vs. The Internet

In addition to that, Americans can speak freely in cyberspace without having to worry about government spying on every word.
Who knows? Perhaps someday the U.S. military will bring freedom to Turkey and South Korea as well. No one should have to deal with government censorship.

Donald Trump is Liberation-Weary

Always be wary when out-of-power establishment-types throw doves into the air.
Senator Obama was going to cleanse the Earth of Bush's barbaric wars. Yet....the barbarism is getting a nice dose of adrenalin.
In a similar vain, here's Donald Trump, who's Republican boys happen to be out of power until 2016:
Did the man who called Ron Paul a "clown-like candidate" have an epiphany? Is he ready to retract that statement?
Here's the very same Donald, when discussing W.'s carnage:
Don't Syrians deserve the same "liberation" treatment that the Iraqis received? Iraq is towering proof that Woodrow Wilson was right!....Right?
Sure 3,790 people have been killed in Iraq in the month of September alone. And yes, warplanes are dropping bombs all over the place, trying to pick-off terrorists who didn't exist in Iraq prior to "liberation." But other than that, some country should really send the Iraqis their very own Statue of Liberty.

Jennifer Rubin's Empire Gluttony

There are neocons, and then there are NEOCONS. Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin definitely falls into the latter category. Every time I read her relentless war essays, I'm flabbergasted that (A) enough people will read it to merit printing in a mainstream paper, and (B) that at the same time our side of peace and liberty are considered "fringe" and "insane".
What a bizarre set of circumstances...
Anyway, as if The Empire didn't have enough self-imposed problems to continue meddling in, whether in the Middle East, or Ukraine, Rubin adds one more to the mix....Hong Kong.

Our experience with dictatorships over decades should remind us. When the U.S. is indifferent or timid on human rights, dictators become more repressive. And when the U.S. then does not react those dictators are emboldened. The result is more brazen aggression and restriction of civil society.This is what a false belief in complete and unlimited power looks like. This is what world government looks like. Forget the UN and other toothless organizations. If someone burps in China, Rubin wants the U.S. on top of it.

Hobbesian Ideas Get A Refresh

It appears the ideas of Thomas Hobbes are getting a little refresh of late.
Obama gets the ball rolling:
Obama and Burns turn the situation (that they helped to create) into a Hobbesian 'without a State, life is brutish and short' fable.
As Murray Rothbard pointed out in his wonderful essay "Anatomy of The State," one of the primary ways that The State preserves itself is to "instill fear of any alternative systems of rule or nonrule."
So take note Americans. When a State collapses, violent extremists take over the "ungoverned" land. Take your nose out of LewRockwell.com. There's nothing to see there. You don't want to live in "chaos".
There is no life without The State, and as The Great Obama has declared: "America leads. We are the indispensable nation. We have capacity no one else has."

It's The Empire's Way...Or The Highway

It's now a well established fact, that the U.S. government wants the world to be one big democratic wonderland. Democracy out of the barrel of a U.S. gun.
It's also now a well-known fact, that once democracy is adopted in another country, those who are elected must be approved by the U.S. government. If the U.S. government does not like the results, then you can count on a coup of some sort to 'fix' it. This stretches back many decades, and leads to our modern times (e.g., Egypt and Ukraine to name just two).
So it's Democracy The Empire's Way....Or The Highway.
Let's now move to conquering the boogeymen.
Amongst the U.S. government's boogeymen are Syria, Hezbollah, Iran & Russia. There are of course more (like North Korea for example), but we'll focus on these right now. It just so happens that ISIS is a threat to Syria, Hezbollah, Iran (and indirectly) Russia.
Ironically, this is a problem for the Empire.
An outsider would rightly think: "Hey, the Empire and ISIS have mutual enemies." As a matter of fact, the Empire and its friends (Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar) helped to arm, train, and foment what would become ISIS.
However, just as the Empire wants Democracy its way, it also wants to slay the boogeymen its way as well.

Then the Empire can get back to slaying the boogeymen...its way.
Meanwhile the economy at home (that's tasked with financing this complete insanity) continues to burn, and burn, and burn.

The formula for getting a government raise is so simple. Every bureaucrat has the capability of memorizing it ---> FAIL.
That's it.
Failure is the greatest 'success secret' in the upside-down world of attempting to run the world. U.S. foreign policy is living proof, as is the U.S.'s public school system. But the principle applies to all aspects of government, not just the juicy failures that are always in our face.
Here's an example that I came across today. Apparently, the massive recalls fromGovernment Motors GM have brought a firestorm of criticism to a government alphabet soup agency called The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The head apparatchik of the NHTSA, and who TIME calls "the man charged with running the nation’s auto-safety administration" is the guy with the plan:
The idea of government being in charge of auto-safety is complete insanity. The car companies are responsible for providing the correct amount of safety that their customers desire. The car companies have every incentive in the world to make sure that "any life lost is one too many".
Why? Because it's bad for business if someone dies as a result of your product!!! Lawsuits can crush them, and they can lose customers en masse!
The government apparatchik, on the other hand, has no customers and is fed with stolen taxpayer money. His incentives are quite different. We know for a fact that if something goes wrong, he may be eligible for a raise!
And this is the same guy who has the gall to say that the government is in charge of keeping "every car company on their toes". Wrong! It is the customers who wield that big stick. For it is the customers who must be separated from their money, and who have the ultimate power of saying "no". Government takes a buzz-saw to the customer's big stick.
The NHTSA will probably get a budget increase. This is America after all. But nothing will change. The opposite of the government's stated wishes will continue to be produced. The NHTSA provides a perfect scapegoat for car companies should something go wrong. They can easily offload the blame, and claim innocence.
Car companies can say: "Hey, don't blame us. We followed all the safety regulations that the NHTSA makes us follow." They're now in the clear. And if there are any unscrupulous players in the industry, they can cut corners with the NHTSA acting as their cover.
In a free marketplace, reputation is paramount. The customer is the king. You can't offload blame on anyone else. However, when government arrives on the scene as "regulator," the whole process is contorted. The merchant/customer relationship gets a DMV-like bureaucrat who stands in the middle and pretends to run the show.

'Finger In The Wind' Cramer on The Fed

The Fed worshippers over at BusinessInsider are running a series of tweets from Cramer. They include:
After seeing these genuflections to the planners in the marble palace, I immediately recalled a much different Jim Cramer. It was at a time when the wind was blowing in the opposite direction. Back in 2007, Cramer was lucky to have Ron Paul on his show.
Dr. Paul, as we all know, is a model on consistently delivering a message.
But check out the words that Cramer was using during that interview:
Will Cramer flip on the Fed (again) when the next financial crisis hits?

I wish you the best of luck sir with your campaign. You are changing things with what you're saying."
So Cramer went from that to: "Bernanke is a hero."

The Thought Police In The Climate Movement

Butler Shaffer nailed it when he said: "The environmental movement is little more than a secular religion made up of members of the faith I describe as Gang Green."
Members of this religion have become increasingly impatient with their progress. They despise anyone who questions their faith. Last year, Paul Krugman delved into what may happen to the doubters in the afterlife:
What is a "skeptic" anyway? Google says that it's "a person inclined to question or doubt all accepted opinions."
In other words, a person who merely has a thought that may stray from what is considered acceptable!
Kennedy wants laws to punish thoughts? Is that possible?
Unfortunately, in a country that has become adrenalized with political correctness, I guess anything is possible.
