Jail Time If You Don't Buy Health Insurance and Don't Pay the Fine?

Politico reports:
Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.

Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it "Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold."

  1. This is just the latest in a long line of government mandates. From auto insurance to public education to the amount and quality of the water you drink to the food you eat and even to the size of your toilet. There is no end to this economic dictatorship. The only answer is to eliminate the government's monopoly over the use of force.

  2. Texas requires auto liability insurance. 20% of drivers in my town have no coverage. If caught, they face big fines and possible jail time.

I expect the same experience with the new individual insurance mandate.

Obama wants to parent the country.

  5. What a joke! OK, with one condition, Since they are going to threaten jail, what with you and me PAYING THEIR SALARIES...don't WE get some say in how they go about it????? YEAH, I THINK SO!! What? they TAKE our taxes and we get no say in this?? I say this for a counter-proposal, what say we the people string your asses up on a pedestal for all to see what happens when you try to FORCE e to take care of MY health your way...no, don't think so, not gonna happen, fuck off. So far, all the comments focus on the "scary" what if's for 'not complying' OMG, what's gonna happen to Fi-Fi?
These assholes want to determine what kind of health you will have, without notifying you about it.You're just gonna LET them herd Mom or Dad or YOU into a health care plan not of your choosing, but of their convenience? I say Fuck that! Sincerely, we the people.

  6. Im impressed, I must say. Very rarely do I come across a blog thats both informative and entertaining, and let me tell you, youve hit the nail on the head. Your blog is important; the issue is something that not enough people are talking intelligently about. Im really happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this issue.
