Michigan's Babysitting Gestapo

A West Michigan woman says the state is threatening her with fines and possibly jail time for babysitting her neighbors' children. Lisa Snyder of Middleville (pictured above) says her neighborhood school bus stop is right in front of her home. It arrives after her neighbors need to be at work, so she watches three of their children for 15-40 minutes until the bus comes.

The Department of Human Services received a complaint that Snyder was operating an illegal child care home. DHS contacted Snyder and told her to get licensed, stop watching her neighbors' kids, or face the consequences.

"It's ridiculous." says Snyder. "We are friends helping friends!" She added that she accepts no money for babysitting. Mindy Rose, who leaves her 5-year-old with Snyder, agrees. "She's a friend... I trust her."

  2. This is very similar to the situation in the UK where "childminding" is actually regulated. Watch someone's kids (not a close blood relative) for a "reward" (and that could be anything!) and you are likely subject to The Childcare Act 2006. It's currently getting a lot of publicity because 2 women helped each other out by watching each other's children - someone reported it to government regulators and the law guys are in full swing! http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/8278533.stm

Governments are the same at the roots everywhere - all operate on the threat of physical force (some just use it more often then others). It is clear from this practice of the UK and Michigan governments (and any others that do this and similar) that children are considered property of the state with the parents permitted to act only as the government's surrogate, without any true authority for the children's upbringing. Citizens who are anxious for government to assume responsibility (pay the costs, via taxes of course) for the care, education, etc of themselves and children are also relinquishing authority for decisions.
