National Review: Rand Paul about to Hit the Trail for Romney

It doesn't appear that it was a mistake when Rand Paul issued his statement at National Review, where he chided Mitt Romney for saying he would go to war against Iran, without approval from Congress.

NR is now all gaga over Rand, telling us all that he is a vice-presidential possibility and gives us the inside scoop that Rand is about to start campaigning for Romney:
In conversations with Romney sources about the VP stakes and related matters, I’m hearing the usual names: Portman, Pawlenty, and Ryan. All three are seen as top campaign surrogates. But one surprising name was added to the mix by a couple of Romney advisers: Senator Rand Paul. Inside Romney world, the Kentucky freshman’s stock is rising. He’s certainly not a leading veep contender — he has not been asked for paperwork — but he is a valued ally. Within weeks, Paul will hit the trail for Romney. Rallies and other public events are in the works.

  1. Senior Romney Advisor: "We weren't sure about Rand at first, but he has shown us he has the flip-flopping credentials we're looking for in a VP candidate."

  2. I guess I am naive in thinking this could be viewed a good news as Rand will be in a position to influence Romney and the party in general in a libertarian direction.

    2. You don't assimilate the establishment.
      The establishment assimilates you.

With all of Ronald Reagan's lofty words about government and liberty, how did THAT turn out.

And in terms of rhetoric and being in a position of power, Rand Paul's no Ronald Reagan.

Seriously, America started out as a relatively free country, with a constitution and a bill of rights. Now it's an empire with a gargantuan government, massive debt and perpetual warfare.
What has 200+ years of electoral politics and compromises done for the country?
What has the Libertarian Party been able to achieve despite appointing practical compromisers as their candidates?

      When will people learn...
And this only even matters if Rand Paul is truly a libertarian secretly trying to move a Trojan Horse of liberty into the Republican Party establishment, which is an assertion based on wishful thinking only.
Empirically speaking, there is NO basis for this blind faith in a politician trying to con the political establishment rather than the voter, while there is plenty of basis to believe the opposite.

  3. Wouldn't it be great if the big plan was Rand playing a "Francisco D'Anconia" type and blowing the whole thing up once he accrued power?

    I know, wishful thinking...

    1. More likely that Rand is being groomed to be the next Reagan type:

  4. You all seem blindsided by this news, yet Rand Paul campaigned in Kentucky as a conservative, not a libertarian, and he said on TV interviews as far back as January that he would support the Republican nominee.

  5. I'm not shocked by this. The apple fell well away from the tree with Rand. Despite this unsavory news, Rand is the best ally the liberty movement has in the senate. Grin and bear it.

  6. I see a future letter published by Rand that begins, "I regret..."
