I usually don't laugh at other people's misfortune but it's kind of hard not to laugh when someone knowingly invests in a ponzi scheme, loses money and then gets upset.

The people going into this "ponzi" knew the risks that they could be the last one in and their money would be given to the others. This is what actually separates this from a real ponzi scheme. This wasn't a traditional ponzi but rather a gamble. Participants went into it with eyes wide open.
The worry was that Vort ran off with the cash which would have violated the nature of the gamble. The nature of BitCoins makes it much more difficult to have gone after Vort had he decided to skip town.
