Was the Facebook Acquisition of WhatsApp an App Download Play?

Jesse Wahl emails

You mentioned in a previous post  (Is WhatsApp Really Worth $19 Billion?) that many of us may not be able to see the value of the WhatsApp purchase that FB (Mark Zuck specifically) can see. I have a feeling this is part of that value. If they can leverage the user data from WhatsApp to directly advertise and promote apps in their apps store, then they have just created a game changer for app downloads and siphoning revenue from Apple and Google.

From the piece (http://www.businessinsider.com/facebooks-app-revenues-v-apple-and-google-2014-3),
Facebook now owns WhatsApp and Instagram, which have another 650 million or so users between them. Although neither of those platforms is seeded with app download links, they are part of Facebook's massive dominance of the global app user ecosystem. Ignore them at your peril.
