Rand Paul: Statist in Libertarian Clothing

By Timothy J Taylor

Just when I’m about to conclude that I could support a candidate for President of the United States, because he spouts a libertarian political view, I discover to my dismay that he’s just another statist politician wearing libertarian clothing.

I thought that Rand Paul was a Libertarian first and a Republican second but it looks like I got it backwards. Last week he threw his considerable political clout behind a statist Republican bill passed by the House to force the Obama administration to crack down on legal marijuana in states like Colorado and Washington.

I swear that these right wing ultra-conservative Republican nut cases, Rand Paul included, would criminalize wet dreams if only they could find a way to enforce it. They constantly whine and howl about wanting ‘states rights’ but when the people of a state vote for a measure they don’t approve of they demand that the statist federal government squash it. They’re the lowest form of hypocrite politicians in the nation.

  2. Wouldn't anyone that runs for President be a statist to some degree? If Libertarian's want any kind of voice in our special interest driven government, they are going to have to lower their standards quite a bit and accept candidates like Rand who try to walk the line. I think the path to a more libertarian society has to come in very small steps. If you think about it, the left has been using this strategy for years to move us closer to socialism. They know as Marx did that change has to come in very, very small steps and over a very long period of time. Sadly, we have enough brain dead and government dependent citizens that a candidate could probably run for President as a Socialist and do rather well.

Pro aggressive economic warfare (sanctions on Russia, Syria, and Iran) and pro federal drug war is too far, sir! You have no standards if this is acceptable. You are like a "principled" virgin playing "just the tip."

    2. Re your statement: "If you think about it, the left has been using this strategy for years to move us closer to socialism."

This works fine for the Left because they are going with, not fighting, the natural trend for government to grow and increase its scope. But for libertarians who are swimming upstream in an almost futile, but heroic, effort to counter this trend, there is is no room for compromise. For libertarians, it has to be all about pushing the ideas with no regard for "practicality." Rothbard had a lot to say about this. Ron Paul knew this well and hence was never concerned that his "no" votes and his bills were dead on arrival. He knew it was all about posturing and advancing the ideas. Rand Paul is the opposite. His priority is to win elections for himself first. That is why he endorsed Romney and caters to the Israel lobby. I think he is doing more harm than good.
