Contract Killer has been Dispatched to the U.S. to Assassinate Russian Double Agent

The man responsible for exposing a Russian spy ring in the U.S., including Anna Chapman, was named Thursday by Russian newspaper the Kommersant as Colonel Shcherbakov, reports NyPo.

The newspaper claimed Shcherbakov, a spy handler with Russia's national intelligence service, provided information to US federal agents in their investigation and arrest of 10 deep cover Russian agents in June.

Shcherbakov is believed to now be in the United States. Vladimir Putin is predicting he will turn into a druggie or boozer said the paper:
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin since denounced the then-unnamed collaborator as someone "who will end up on booze, or drugs -- under the fence."
NyPo indicates it could be even worse for Shcherbakov:

At the same time, a contract killer has been dispatched to assassinate the Russian double agent who betrayed Chapman and the others.
"We know who he is and where he is," a high-ranking Kremlin source told the reputable Kommersant newspaper. "You can have no doubt – a Mercader has already been sent after him."

  1. Is Mercader some kind of idiom in Russian/reference to this guy?
