A Libertarian Solution to Stop the Violence in Chicago

Monday saw the shooting of two girls, 12 and 13, part of a series of recent shootings of young bystanders, as the gangbanger battles rage on Chicago's south side.

The homicide rate is up 38 percent in Rhamalnd and there have been increased mob attacks downtown and on the subways.

Clearly, this is total government failure. The last desperate act of the defender of government is to claim that without government wild shootouts and robberies will be a regular occurrence. I believe that it is a myth that government protects us from such things. The activity on Rhamaland's south side is proof of that.

There is plenty of government in Chicago that has at the top a smooth talking mayor, who used to be the chief of staff to the president. There are over 12,000 police in Rahmaland. And there are plenty of taxes in Chicago, property taxes, income taxes and sales taxes. The 2012 budget forecast for the city is $8.2 billion in revenues.

And yet the city can't protect its south side young.

Thus, I propose that the city halt all tax collections on the south side of Chicago. That all property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes be ended for all residents of the south side. Innocent children are dying. This is an epic fail of government. The mayor of Rahmalnd holds spectacular meetings to discuss billion dollar infrastructure projects that will benefit his crony buddies while the children of the south side are killed.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has failed Chicago residents, especially those on the south side. At least when you pay protection money to the mafia, they provide protection! City taxes must be ended for southsiders now.

Next drugs must be made legal on the south side. All drugs, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, LSD, all of them. Most of the gang shootings are turf wars over drug sales. If all drugs were legal, the gang bangers would lose a major reason for existence. Drugs should be made legal so that they would be available at convenience stores, the same way aspirin, coca cola and candy bars are allowed to be sold.

Guns laws should be lifted, so that anyone can carry any kind of gun they want, without any registration. Chicago gun laws are among the strictest in the nation and it is resulting in only bad guys carrying guns. If gun carry restrictive laws were eliminated, subway crime would drop immediately. There are enough people sufficiently scared when riding the Chicago subway system that these riders would start carrying guns. And thugs would get gun downed until they got the message that the good guys are carrying guns and that the good guys way outnumber the thugs.

Finally, minimum wage laws should be eliminated on the south side. If you look at the age of most of these shooters, they are generally between 15 and 16 years old. These are unskilled kids, who are most impacted by minimum wage laws. They can only be profitably employed at a much lower wage than the current minimum wage.

Bottom line: The south side needs to ditch a lot of Rhamaland government.

There is no need to pay property taxes, sales taxes and income taxes to the city, when the city has failed so miserably. The south side must then ignore state city and federal regulations and legalize drugs, to eliminate the heart of the gang money flow. It must eliminate minimum wages, so the kids can find themselves respectable jobs, rather than gang thug jobs. And, finally, gun laws must be eliminated so that grandma can sit on the porch with her shotgun and protect her grandkids, since Rahm Emanuel isn't coming close to protecting anybody on the south side.

  1. Brilliantly argued, Mr. Wenzel, except for one fatal flaw: Opponents of your plan could strike it down with a single word -- RACISM!

As in, "So you're saying that the poor black folk in the south side should have drugs all over their community [legalizing drugs] and everyone running around with guns [repealing gun restrictions]?! Aren't their lives worth something??" And they would say all of this with a straight face, not realizing that drugs and guns are already everywhere.

So I want to say that the real 'enemy' is ignorance (aka stupidity, lack of common sense, or just not thinking straight)...

But then I think that the true problem is that maybe the nanny state / big government / welfare gives *insecure people from broken homes* a (false!) sense of security, as if there is someone out there looking out for them, who 'cares' about them... When really that someone just wants to use and abuse the lives of others in order to live high on the hog irregardless of what damage is caused to society and culture. Call it "Dependency Issues"...

    1. Yep we might be the ones holding your heads in the toilet bowl and flushing it but we are doing it in a caring way, unlike those racists, who will just leave you alone and not take your money or stuff you in the hole forever, for having a couple of extra ounces.

    2. Wenzel's plan isn't flawed, just because of the cornucopia of strawmen or other logical fallacies that his opponents would use against him. With that logic it would make any plan 'flawed', as statists have forever, and will continue to use fallacies against sound logic.
There is no logical argument that will leave statists stumped and calling a libertarian plan foolproof.

RW knows full well his plan will never be accepted and implemented. That doesn't change the fact that only this plan will work in the long run.

  2. Wait, are you saying that threatening violent kids that are mostly hopeless and illogical isn't a way to calm the situation?

OMG, someone needs to call Rahm and let him know right away.

  3. Mr. Wenzel, Your solution is the only one with a chance of working. Clearly the measures that have been 'tried', i.e. talked about during campaigns but never implemented, have been abject failures. From a defeatist point of view, one could argue 'Why not? How much worse could it get?' From a realist point of view, I'm sure it would be stunningly successful. While there would initially be cries of 'racism' (I agree with the previous comment), the ends would clearly demonstrate that your approach is actually anti-racist, if there is such a thing.

It's too bad politicians care more about their political hides, and their own and their buddies' coffers to speak the truth.

  4. These are all good ideas, so you know they aren't going to be done.

  5. "The south side needs to ditch a lot of Rhamaland government."

Then they would have a different gang to deal with; one toting their own guns, as well as tear gas, tasers, helicopters, armored vehicles and drones.

  6. How about this - The good people of the south side pay protection money to the gangs to defend them from Rahm?

  8. The only thing that I missed in the article was how they would handle schooling . . . I don't think that's a one day fix, but libertarianism could certainly solve it better.

  9. Given that Illinois is already broke and Chicago is in a worse predicamen, would not a better solution be:
    1. People have the right to call binding referendums on both state and city level.
    2. Referendum that requires state and city governments to use general accounting standards for the budget.
    3. Referendum that any increase in direct or indirect taxes from government bills requires a referendum.

This is the first step to returning power to population.

As concerns the southside, I agree with your proposal of making it a tax free zone with no minimum wage laws. As the majority of the flats and houses tend to be either owned or paid for by the government, an even more radical proposal is to give the residents title to their flats and end all government programs in the area while allowing for a free market zone excluded from city, state and federal jurisdiction. That way healthcare and other services could be provided at a lower cost while improving the quality. Also as owners of their properties people would have an interest in improving their neighborhoods and security.
