More on Libertarians Having Much Better Taste in Music That Paul Krugman

At his blog, Krugman posts this music video.

Meanwhile, libertarian Karen DeCoster, posts the below  video at LRC and writes:
I have to give my nod as the best visual performance [of Boléro] ever to Valery Gergiev conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. I have a great fondness for Gergiev, who always appears as if he stayed out all night drinking and showed up at the hall at the last minute to conduct.
Apparently, Ravel was suffering from Alzheimer's when he wrote Boléro. Karen has more on it here.

  1. Then of course, there's Bob Murphy, further proving your point

  2. Can we get a Top Ten list of Wenzel's favorite musicians?

  3. Bolero, Alzheimer's: See, he wasn't TRYING to make it repetitive, he just forgot that the last measure was just like the NEXT measure.
Y'know, like Krugman saying the Gummint should start SPENDING.

  4. Always liked Praeludium Allegro by Kreisler myself.

  5. I would argue that Ravel HAD to be deep into Alzheimer's to write Bolero. The ending is fun, though, if its done right.

  6. nice :) Ravel was a big influence on one of my heroes, Miles Davis, and I never really bothered to listen to him.

  7. After viewing both videos, perhaps we could generalize this theory to the following postulate:

All economically literate people have shitty taste in music.

  8. Zappa did Bolero, so it couldn't be that bad.

  9. Both pieces are are full of joy and shouldn't be compared by fools who think they know what is in 'good taste'.

  10. What a stupid blog post.

Here we have an Austrian, trying to turn value (tastes in music) into an objective rather than subjective enterprise.

Menger is spinning in his grave.

News flash: If you are an Austrian, then there is no such thing as objectively better and worse music. It is all dependent and grounded on the individual. If Krugman likes that music, and Coster likes other music, then there is nothing else to be said. Nobody has "better taste" than the other.

Wenzel, you should delete this post, apologize, admit you were wrong, and never do this again.

Or, you can do what you usually do, and try to weasel your way out of making a mistake, because you NEVER make any mistakes.

To admit to a mistake would cast doubt on the entire Austrian edifice wouldn't it? /sarcasm.

    1. You sound very emotional right now. Is that you, Krugman?

    2. I think it's pretty safe to say that someone who likes eating poop has very shitty taste.

    3. I agree. The post is idiotic. For all the reasons stated by George and probably a few more reasons.

Side note: Elephant Revival is very good. Wenzel probably hadn't heard of them for over 15 minutes before he wrote this post. At least their music got another link.

Wenzel always correctly criticizing others for not thinking more than a step or two ahead. Yet somehow, about once a week, he is incapable of preventing himself from posting something with such little substance, things with such severely flawed premises...I really don't get it.

  12. As a professional musician, both videos show some excellent musicianship in very different styles. Taste is arbitrary. Fighting about it reflects deep foolishness.
