Petr Pinkhasov, a student i the process of obtaining his JD, has created what he calls the Google Unemployment Index. It tracks unemployment related searches on Google, including for "unemployment, food stamps, social security, edd, disability" and so forth.
This is not exactly an unemployment index but an index of distress and government support of the unemployed, but it is informative and points to how high the index remains relative to the pre-financial crisis period.
