Radioactive Snow in St Louis, Missouri!!; Spiking Radiation at California Beach!!

According to DutchSinse, who posted a video of himself taking the Geiger readings in St Louis, the radiation levels in the snow are elevated. The findings mean that ‘small particles of radioactive material are indeed coming down in the precipitation. Past tests show around 30CPM in the same spot on a nice day with no precipitation’. He is now getting readings twice those previous levels.

In the greater San Fracisco region, a beach contains five times the safe levels of radiation fueling concerns that Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant’s crisis is impacting areas across the country.

Health officials in San Mateo County confirmed the spike – which was reaching over 150 micro-REM per hour – but said they were ‘befuddled’ about what had caused it.

A video shows a man measuring radiation readings at different spots on the beach south of Pillar Point Harbor.

Background radiation in the areas immediately surrounding the beach are normal, but once the man approaches the water itself, the radiation spikes to at least 500 per cent safe levels and the Geiger counter’s alarm goes off.

I know we have some nuclear and radiation experts who follow EPJ, I would really love to hear your comments on these readings. Are they isolated incidents that have nothing to do with Fukushima, or should we be concerned about a developing radiation storm?

  3. I've worked on in, and around a lot of high energy machines and handled a lot of RAM. Nothing has ever happened to me, thanks to two layers of tin foil. BTW, most of those survey meters have a .1 micro-curie Cs-137 calibration source on the side of the meter. Don't suppose his other meters could be picking up some of that? Any way 60cpm? "Like... what ever"

  6. For the San Francisco radioactive source, a CEO of a company that manufactures radiation detectors claims to have tested samples from the beach (see linked article Radiation of California Beaches.) Bottom line: samples showed high concentrations of Radium and Thorium that are expected from natural sources, (see section “Natural Radioactivity in Soil” from this link), but not Cesium or any other isotope expected in contamination from a fission reactor (see section “Human Produced” from the same link). In short, this is most likely from a natural source unrelated to Fukushima.

I think that the snow is a non-issue – I interpret the difference between 30 CPM and 60 CPM as negligible, a good “bounce” around what background is. In the nuclear field, 100 CPM above background is used as a threshold indication that contamination is possible (for example, see step 4 of frisking procedures on page 14 (pdf page 20) of this radiological worker guide, or the 4th paragraph on page 66 (pdf page 67) of this guide). If he had recorded around 130 CPM, there would be something to investigate. Of note, this is why the San Francisco beach source was worthwhile to investigate, where the detector peaks at 153 CPM after bouncing around 40 CPM when approaching the beach.

While I’m at it: Fukushima most likely isn’t dissolving starfish, either. I keep running into this one.

Thanks for the insight that you provide here at EPJ!
