Trump Issues Crazed Threat Against Toyota

Let's face it, Donald Trump is a complete idiot when it comes to understanding trade.

Here is his latest threat:

Comparative advantage explains why Toyota would want to build cars in Baja, Mexico and it has nothing to do with "hurting" American workers.

Trump is going to take us into a global trade dark age. It will accomplish nothing but lower standards of livings in the United States and worldwide.

  1. This goes beyond not understanding Comparative Advantage, Robert. His attack on Toyota's decision to build a car assembly plant in Baja as if it were a personal affront shows a clear prejudice against Mexico itself. From the standpoint of the origin, what difference does it make where they build them, if Mexico or Japan or Timbuktu? But because the plan says "Mexico" he threatens to impose a tariff on cars built by that plant. That comment does not make sense within the frame of protecting American jobs. This is clear bias against Mexico.

    1. Donald Trump is an us vs them guy. Us is America First. What tariff can he impose? Nobody seems to talk about that much, that I notice.

I voted for Gary Johnson in 2016.

  2. Finally one I can fact-check.

The plant is in Guanajuato, not Baja. It is true that the Tacoma plant in BC will be increasing production, however.

Also should be noted that the Corolla volume that the plant in GT is replacing is currently coming from Ontario,CA.

I'd have to look at the exact numbers but the current plan might DECREASE imports.

  3. Obviously he isn't familiar with the Golden Rule. How the hell would he feel if the government kept slamming his business with punitive imaginary "taxes" because they didn't like what he was doing. So far he is waaay worse than I thought he would be and he still hasn't even taken office. I believe that Wenzel will be proven right and Trump and his legions of Neo Nationalists are gonna eff things up pretty bad and we will wish Crooked Hillary had won. Hillary would be that highly evolved parasite that knows it cannot be so harmful that it kills the host. Trump is going to be the economic version of Ebola.

  4. This will gain him votes and I hope it is coupled with lowering the capital taxes.

  5. Mr. Trump obviously has little understanding of comparative advantage or most of what we would call free market economics. He does however, seem to have some understanding of populism. the other half of comparative advantage though is what the hell do we sell the Mexicans at comparative advantage that they want or can afford to buy. Seriously, look at this country, rapidly descending into the morass of the welfare state, nobody needs to buy anything we sell except for basic raw materials. A complete inversion of the way it is supposed to be.

    1. Well if Americans really produce nothing, then foreigners will stop sending us things and the "problem" of imports will be solved.

  6. Has anyone else noticed trump is going after mainly(only?) union shop targets with his scalpel? I wonder why...

We are looking at this from how bad it is economically and forgetting to look at it politically. Does he care about saving jobs or courting union voters? Does he really believe half the things he says on twitter or is it for populist grandstanding?

We - need - policy - details! Not just populist twitter rantings to go by.

  7. A Dark Age?

Remember that the decision to build in Baja is based on the presumption that they will not be taxed at the US border. If it is Trump's intention to tax at the border then he is doing Toyota a favor by letting them know in advance.

    1. Bwahaha! "Oh thank you so much Donald for warning us in advance about your moronic fascist predations!"

Is this really what Trump defenders have been reduced to?

  8. Which one of you geniuses can explain "Comparative Advantage" to the 95+ Million (with an "M") people who have no job or are alternating between part time jobs flipping burgers and cleaning commercial buildings?

    1. Shouldn't be that hard. They wouldn't be able to afford their iPhones or PS4's or flat screens from WalMart if those things were ordained to be made only by the American Worker(TM)

  9. Ps. Like it or not, he is doing EXACTLY what he said he would do during his campaign. That in itself is a fresh approach. If you voted against him, YOU LOST! So get over it. In four years, you can change all that. He has a BULLY pulpit. Bullies aren't nice. Trump isn't nice.
