Murdoch: "We Will Charge for All News Sites"

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch says that the company intends to charge for all of its news internet sites, according to MarketWatch.

"Quality journalism is not cheap, and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalizing its ability to produce good reporting," Murdoch said. Yes and no.

Television news for decades has given away its product, based on an advertiser supported model.

I am going to be watching this move closely. You have to have some pretty strong and unique product to be able to charge for it on the internet, and if it is that unique you can get strong advertiser revenue, in most circumstances, that more than outweighs charging for access.

  3. Wenzel,

Maybe Murdoch's strategy involves secret armies of lawyers who will extract "fees" from bloggers who attempt to distribute for-pay content free of charge by quoting or referring to it on their blogs? Maybe that's how it will end up being profitable?
