The U.S. Has Implemented a $450 Fee for Those Who Want to Renounce U.S. Citizenship

The line for leaving the U.S. must be getting pretty long.

The State Department has announced that there is now a fee to renounce your U.S. citizenship: $450.

This is, of course, on top of the  30% exit tax.

Speculation is that the new fee is a result of growing numbers wishing to renounce, and that the State Department has formalised the process.

  1. It's just the beginning of restrictions the U.S. government will impose on people who want to get out.

In just a few years, China's leader will be visiting south of the border, demanding, "Mr. Obama, tear down this wall!"

  2. Wouldn't a simple "forget you, I quit" letter suffice? How about simply ignoring them?

  3. Ironically, being very heavily in debt before you leave might be a good tactical plan.

  4. $450 sounds like a nice number, yeah, we'll charge that amount. We can hire more people and stuff and whenever we run low, we'll just up the fee! Brilliant.

Now they just need to convince the people that renunciation is a privilege and not a right. Is your name on one of the myriad of secret DHS lists? Denied.

  5. A year ago I started a blogspot site titled "by-by-usa" I intended to use it to find the best countr for expatriation. Of course it languished as I did little to promote it or keep it going. Someone should start such a site today. I'd be happy to contribute - as a lawyer admitted in NY and Nj I do have something to contribute.

  6. I have every reason to believe I have lost the ability to do math, mainly due to all the govt. policies and laws I see enacted. Maybe someone can help me with this question though. What is 30% of nothing? $450?
