HOT: Obama to Announce Wage Freeze for Government Workers

From West Wing Report:
Govt. source: President Obama to announce a salary freeze for U.S. govt. workers. Eisenhower Bldg. announcement 11:30
I smell a rat. Ideally, government jobs should be reduced Big Time, a salary freeze is nothing. But now that government workers will be "sacrificing" with this wage freeze, what kind of "sacrifice" will be expected from the private sector. A VAT tax, perhaps?

UPDATE

 From MarketWatch
Federal civilian employees' pay would be frozen in 2011 and 2012 under a proposal made Monday by President Barack Obama. The pay freeze is part of a strategy to cut the U.S. budget deficit and would save $2 billion for the rest of fiscal year 2011, and $28 billion over the next five years, the White House said. The freeze would apply to all civilian federal employees but not military personnel.

  1. Any limit on spending is welcome, but how about some cuts? When you're talking about trillions a year, 28 billion over 5 years is chump change.

  2. $2 billion in 2011, eh? You know, you could save that much in a few days if he would withdraw the troops from Afghanistan/Iraq immediately. Heck, he could save that in a few hours if he'd bring 'em all home from our foreign imperial bases all over the world.

How about (also) cutting back on defense, entitlements, pork spending budgets, Dept. of Education, etc, etc, etc.?

I like the notion that our "foreign imperial bases" play a key role in entitling us to reserve currency status of the world.
