How to Find a Job

For those of you that are not going to take James Althucher's advice and make your own job, here's some helpful advice.

Iris Mack was once fired from Harvard by Larry Summers after she warned him about the dangers of the derivatives in  the Harvard endowment portfolio. After she was fired the portfolio blew up and sank by billions, just like she warned. Since then she has been travelling the globe as a consultant and also running a web site where she puts up useful tips, mostly about math and financial literacy. She has also put together these job links:
  • linkedin.com
  • guru.com (contract and freelance positions)
  • wilmott.com (finance jobs)
  • monster.com
  • idealist.org (I haven't used it yet. I recently learned about it on facebook.)
  • indeed.com (I haven't used it yet. I recently learned about it on facebook.)
  • IvyExec.com (If you graduated from an Ivy League school.)
  • facebook.com
  • http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/ (Government Jobs)
Note, I'm not sure exactly how she does it, but Iris lands the most interesting jobs, so when she identifies job links, pay attention. I just got an email from her that she sent from Europe, so she gets around. She also has an ability to meet the most interesting people, but you will have to wait for her book for more about that.

  4. I'd like to exchange my labor for substance, but the people with guns who claim the moral authority to shoot me have declared it illegal.

  8. Not that sites like CareerBuilder and Monster aren't useful. But, if you post a resume on there you constantly get pestered with "recruiters" looking for sales people. They sell you a pitch, tell you your resume is amazing and talk you up like you should be a CEO or something. But in the end these guys just get bonuses for bringing in new recruits. A lot of insurance and financial sales companies do this (e.g Primerica). It got quite irritating and I eventually took my resume down. Monster was the worse of the two.

I used my alma maters job site to find jobs in the past.

But at the end of the day nothing beats networking. You get to know jobs before they are posted and you have the benefit of a friend/colleague personally handing in your resume. It beats putting your resume in an employers database and hoping the HR department comes across it.
