Too bad she was so uncertain ("I THOUGHT I saw a letter..."). She should have insisted she saw and read it, and called him a liar to his face. From what I've read (here and at LRC), he has very thin skin. He could very well have lost it, on camera.
He reminds me of that lying doctor Charles Nichols (played by Jeroen Krabbe) in the 1993 film "The Fugitive" starring Harrison Ford.
