Romney Goes Military Mad

Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has announced that he wants to increase active duty personnel by 100,000.

Romney also said that the defense budget is now about 3.8 percent of the nation's gross domestic product and he would like to see that figure rise to 4 percent. He then went on to say that the Navy needs more than 300 ships. "We're down to 285 now and we're heading to the low 200s. We can't fulfill our naval missions at those levels," he said. He said he wants naval warships to intimidate Iran.

He did not mention he would likely have to also buy more money printing machines for Bernanke, who would have to print up the money to pay for this.

  1. Why? Has the Imperial Japanese navy surfaced again?

  2. "Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney has announced that he wants to increase active duty personnel by 100,000."

Courting the militarist vote. The only way to do so is to rattle the war sabre because he has no other credentials there. Of course, unlike the people he wants to send into death, he has never and will never be near a battlefield.

"Romney also said that the defense budget is now about 3.8 percent of the nation's gross domestic product and he would like to see that figure rise to 4 percent."

I thought the total was about 7-8%? According the Robert Higgs numbers, the correct total for war spending was about $1 trillion taking into account all the ways they've hidden money outside the usual military budget. Assuming Higgs is wrong and Romney is correct, why is that .2 percent so important? In fact, why not less spending?

What current naval missions require 15 more ships? Actually, better question, what navy on the planet even comes close the logistical ability and destructive power of just half of the US fleet? And actually, since reason for the wars is terrorists, who have largely been located in deserts and mountains, why does it make any sense at all to get more ships to combat them there?

  3. They really just don't get it do they ?

The war machine isn't working for Main Street. All they do by printing up that dough is screw the populace through inflation. It really is time to stop the nation building and focus on things here at home. I think I've finally reached the point where I no longer care.

I'm ready to leave the US and never look back and I'm pretty sure most of the upcoming generation are starting to think the same way.

Good luck paying for all of this governmental largesse when your tax base has pulled up anchor and left.

Strong work guys. Zimbabwe time for the US Dollar. Absolutely nauseating.
