The State of California's Fastest Growing Major Cost

File under: As the state bankrupts itself.

It isn’t economic development, parks, health care, highways, or transit. Instead, it is the state’s the prison system, which $9.8 billion in 2011, according to Priscilla Hamilton at the Milken Institute.

Two out of the top 5 crimes committed in California appear to be mostly non-criminal: sex-offenders and controlled substance possession.

  1. Well it's time to legalize drugs, control them, tax them and let those folks out of prison who haven't hurt anyone.

    1. Decriminalize, but dont tax or control. The state already has enough revenue streams to abuse.
      Why enable the junkies further?

  2. Sex offense persecution is an industry now. As a lawyer I see my fair share of this disgusting source of revenue for the state. 9 out of 10 are teenagers or young 20 somethings shacking up with 14 or 15 year olds. Something that has happened and was not a crime for most of human history.

The offender label follows the person for many years, if not for life, and the dehumanizing rules and "treatment" do a good job of keeping these people tied to the state and its system for years and years, and even decades. Every month, wealth is extracted through parole or probation payments, treatment fees, and on and on.

The "treatment" is performed by bottom feeding "psychologists" whose practice is largely subsidized, if not 100% paid for, by government referral of sex offenders. They then proceed to provide medical treatment, yet there was never a medical diagnosis. It's just twisted.

The worst is that the various members of local leviathan feeding at the trough (court employees, prisons, treatment providers, politicians) keep repeating the mantra that sex offending is a lifelong medical condition that is incurable. It is like the Soviet Union mixed with the Twilight Zone. Of course, this sludge is licked up by the lapdog judges so they can justify putting each "offender" through 5-20 years of public shaming and living hell.

    1. Most of those incarcerated for "sexual crimes" are prostitutes for that non-crime.
