The centrally planned taxi system is so absurd in San Francisco that calling for a taxi is like playing roulette.
The San Francisco Examiner reports that, based on testimony from taxi companies and an industry study, would-be customers have only a 40 percent chance of being picked up after calling for a cab.
This is not an exaggeration, when in San Francisco, many times I have called for a taxi and they never showed. I finally put a town car driver on call.
The central planning masters, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s board of directors, have recognized the problem, but going free market is too much for these characters to handle. Instead, they have now deemed that the number of taxis that can cruise the streets of SF can be increased by 200, from 1,535 vehicles to 1,735.
