Why Iranian President Ahmadinejad Doesn't Wear Ties

Iranians are prohibited from wearing ties in Iran because they contribute to the spreading of western culture, according to the website of the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khameini, says the BBC.

The BBC adds:

The practice stems from the 1979 Islamic revolution when the monarchy was overthrown and a unique Islamic republic was declared, in which religious clerics - headed by Ayatollah Khomeini - wielded ultimate political control.

Neckties - and bowties - were said to be decadent, un-Islamic and viewed as "symbols of the Cross" and the oppressive West.

Iranians were told to wear "standard Islamic garments" designed to remove ethnic and class distinctions reflected in clothing.

Nowadays ties are still frowned on as "the influence of westernisation" on the way Iranians, especially young people, dress.

Ties are "highly politicised clothing" in Iran, says the BBC's correspondent in Tehran, Frances Harrison.

  1. The necktie represents the noose used in masonic initiations. That's why he doesn't wear it.

  2. Funny how some people around the world view this as the Christian West vs. the Islamic Middle East. The West gave up most of its Christianity a while ago. I don't blame Middle Easterners for holding on to their culture, but the tie to Westerners has nothing to do with the cross. Hardly any priest even wears a cassock these days.

  3. The only way to get me, as a Christian Westerner, to wear a tie is to forbid it upon pain of state violence. So.... what?

  4. This is indeed true. My grandfather used to call me Iranian because I hate to wear ties.

    1. Hi.I'm an Iranian. We do not hate tie!!!Most men do not use the tie Because In the time before the Islamic Revolution was the government of the West and Iranian kings and the rich used to imitate the West Tie.They did not even think of the people،They were not even thinking about the poor ...
And just to think that West cover to enter Iran Because of this People do not wear a tie
