Why Were the First Anglo Settlers in America Cannibals?

News is out that the first Anglo-American settlers in America, at Jamestown, practiced cannibalism.

This should come as no surprise to students of economics. Central planning often leads to desperation. Nikita Kruschev in his memoir, Kruchev Remembers, reported cases of cannibalism in the Ukraine.  Below is Murray Rothbard discussing the conditions under central planning that led to the desperation in Jamestown---that was later reversed when the settlers resorted to free markets and private property.
