Paul, who has presidential aspirations and is looking to run in 2016, needs McConnell’s connections to the wealthy donor base of the Republican establishment. Meanwhile, McConnell needs Paul’s tea party influence to keep potential primary challengers at bay and to energize his general election campaign against the likely Democratic nominee, Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.
WaPo then reports on absurd comments from Rand Paul campaign manager Jesse Benton:
“Mitch McConnell is an important ally and a conservative voice in Washington for the people of Kentucky,” the younger Paul said in a statement to The Associated Press. “The commonwealth is stronger because of his service and I look forward to continuing to work with him.”For the record, "conservative" McConnell has:
- supported several gun control measures put forth by Democrats, including the 1991 Crime Bill S.1241
- voted for Barbara Boxer's Trigger Lock Amendment 323
- introduced the Protect America Act of 2007, which allowed the National Security Agency to monitor telephone and electronic communications of suspected terrorists inside and outside the United States without obtaining a warrant.
- voted for the initial War in Iraq, has supported the "troop surge", and opposed a timetable for withdrawal from the country
McConnell is a total establishment insider. Among his top 5 donors are Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup.
According to WaPo:
Most think McConnell could spend as much as $30 million on the upcoming next race. Republican super PACs could spend an additional $30 million, making the race Kentucky’s most expensive ever.
