There is a yin and yang to government harassment of individuals. Currently, there seems to be a trend toward legalization of marijuana, but watch out if you are a trans fat user. The Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday a plan to take artificial trans fats entirely out of the food supply.
Here's a list of foods that may contain trans fats (via Heath.com):
French fries
Pie
Margarine
Pancakes
Fried chicken
Microwave popcorn---if there are toppings
Ground beef
Cookies
Biscuits and sweet rolls
Slim Jims
Frozen dinners
Asian crunchy noodles
Canned chili
Packaged pudding
Enjoy current tasty versions while you can.
So nothing but pure, wholesome butter in those pot brownies.
ReplyDeleteHey savingspace37, how about legalizing trans fats as long as they're taxed, that work for you?
ReplyDeleteWhat on earth is the political calculus behind banning trans fats? Doesn't it substantially harm concentrated and well-represented industrial interests? Where is the countervailing benefit to the FDA and the administration?
ReplyDeleteLeftism is a game in which the object of the game is to acquire as much social status as possible. That means opposing low-status things, like trans fats, and supporting high-status things, like marijuana.
DeleteTrans fats (and large sodas etc) are low status because fat people eat/drink them. Marijuana is high status because all the cool people smoke it.
Ergo, if you want to be cool, you oppose trans fats and large sodas, and support legalising marijuana.
Doesn't it seem odd to anyone that the government thinks it can ban whatever it feels like?
ReplyDeleteCan't it? Even the Volstead Act was repealed, not overturned. Federal authority has only grown since then. Is there even one case where the government wanted to ban something and didn't eventually get its way?
DeleteIs there a more healthy alternative to trans fats that tastes just as good?
ReplyDeleteIf there is, and if the cost is similar, then I have no problem with a ban on them.
Generally I am not in favor of goobermint meddling, but if craporations are intentionally harming people, and if a better and painless alternative exists, then I can be persuaded to let the goobermint pass laws to make us safer.
Substitute the phrase, 'force us to be' in place of the word 'make' in this paragraph, and then please reconsider your position:

Consider the principle you're supporting here. If they can force you in one instance, they can do it in many,... so long as it's for the greater good, or at least presented that way?
...Next week, typing on blogs will be banned in an attempt to make us all be safer from carpel tunnel. And on it goes...
CRAP!!! There goes my whole diet. How am I suppose to lose weight now???
