On Gin and Great Men

Lew Rockwell has a great post up today on gin, The Man’s Primer on Gin.

I am a gin drinker, Bombay Sapphire with tonic, but I choked a little when I saw this in an otherwise great article:
Many great men through history have enjoyed gin: Winston Churchill, FDR, Ernest Hemingway, etc.
I'm neutral on Hemingway, but I have read too much Ralph Raico to think that Churchill and FDR were anywhere close to great men.

That said, there were two great men who were a gin drinkers.

H. L. Mencken called the martini "the only American invention as perfect as the sonnet."

And, I once asked David Gordon, who knew Murray Rothbard very well, if Rothbard had a favorite drink. David told me it was the martini.

UPDATE:

Lew Rockwell emails to correct  David's assertion that Rothbard was a gin martini drinker:
The martini was his favorite drink, but the Stolichnaya martini.

EPJ rocks! Not only brilliant insights and uncommon, common sense, but a martini drinker to boot. Thanks for all you do.

Take mine with Noilly Prat and 3 olives. Always a one olive toll when my wife is present.

  4. That post is from The Art of Manliness blog, which is generally a great read, although they look up to some of history's great butchers like Teddy Roosevelt, Churchill, FDR, etc. way too much. They had a post on great war books and I commented on the post that "Great Wars and Great Leaders" is an essential read, and really takes those leaders down more than a few notches (and kicks them in the nuts).

    1. Totally agree! Brokers is the most complex gin I have ever run across. Even recognized by Wine Spectator who normally only rates wines. Best in class. If you can find it, treat yourself, and try it..

  7. I know some gin, I prefer Hendricks and Rangpur, but doesn't a Stolichnaya Martini imply a vodka?

    1. That was the point of Lew's email.

    Bob,

I strongly suggest you try Hendrick's with Fever Tree Tonic and a slice of Cucumber.

I was served this at a wonderful Indian restaurant in London over the summer...WOW!

  10. Gin is more of a spring/summer spirit for me, but I always appreciate a good gin martini. I also suggest Hendrick's - it's by far the best gin out there in my estimation. For a fun piece on gin, I can't think of a better read than what the Philadelphia Lawyer (an anonymous, libertarian-leaning lawyer from Philly) put up on his site a few years ago: http://philalawyer.net/2009/06/gin/
