1) Contrasting Indians as slaves to the Africans as slaves and how running away caused maintenance problems for the system. 2) How "preserving the union" was mystically attached to freedom as the casus belli. 3) How the Civil War reversed the long-term trend for gov't power to recede, for coercive authority to become restrained, limited, and less intrusive. 4) S. Carolina hired local Indian tribes selling Indians to the West Indies to pay for the importation of black slaves. 5) Upper South, particularly Virginia, wanted to maintain the value of their slaves so they could sell them to the South.
