Ex-Wife Rejects $975 Million Divorce Settlement Check

Harold Hamm, chief executive of oil driller Continental Resources who is embroiled in a bitter divorce, offered to pay his former wife $974.8 million, but she rejected a hand-written check delivered to her legal team, his lawyer said today, according to Reuters.

Hamm's offer to pay ex-wife Sue Ann Arnall immediately the full cash value of what he owes based on a November divorce ruling by an Oklahoma County judge was rejected, Hamm's lawyer, Michael Burrage, said in an emailed statement.

"Ms. Arnall, through her counsel, stated that they were rejecting the ... payment because Ms. Arnall did not want to risk the dismissal of her appeal by acceptance of the benefits," Burrage wrote.

  1. Ya I don't blame her, she wouldn't be able to keep the wolf away from the door with that little.

  2. Whoa, if she rejected the payment, he doesn't owe her anything. For an obligation to exist, there must be an obligator (the one who pays), and an obligatee (the one who receives). If no obligation exists, then an honorable man would reject someone giving you money for an obligation they thought existed. By rejecting the money, she also rejects the obligation.

    1. Not sure that'd stand up in court, unfortunately. But what do I know?

  3. Mr. Hamm can just forward that check to me. I'll be very glad to accept it.

  4. Our divorce laws are ridiculous. How much of that did she actually earn?

    1. Zip, but don't tell a divorcee that going after alimony is akin to robbery. You just might get crucified by leftists like feminists and conservatives alike.

    2. What's "earn" got to do with it?

    3. @ Anon

Maybe having sex with her husband & washing his streaked underwear is worth more in her mind.

      Value is subjective.

      :)

What we have here is a fundamental disagreement over the value of her services. So it is possible that a group of their "peers" will determine how much sex, cleaning, and/or emotional support is worth....lol....or maybe they'll just pick a random number out of the air and have gov't force him to hand it over.

Sometimes I wonder if it doesn't make sense for everyone to have a contact upon marriage(not just a prenup traditionally) to spell things out.

But then again, it kills the romance to talk about/write a contract over what happens if the person you marry one day becomes someone you don't want to be married to anymore, doesn't it?

      lulz

    4. Exactly RN. Do NOT marry guys! you have ZERO rights in divorce court. And she gets a huge cash payout whether or not she earns it. YOU pay. SHE benefits.

  5. She probably wants her billion dollars. Not the $300 million she'd be left with after the government takes it's cut.

  6. We laugh at the staggering numbers involved but this is a scene played out numerous times every day on a more pedestrian level. Wives - who spent their days at Starbucks after greeting the housekeeper and dropping off the kids at school and after school programs - thinking they are entitled to half the wealth that their husbands slaved away for during 80 hour weeks for ten years. Most men would be better off staying single and hiring a maid and a secretary.
