Not only price inflation but also grade inflation.  More Americans now graduate from high school (up from 6% 100 years ago), but the literacy rate (as measured according to [probably] higher standards back then) has fallen, I would suspect. Public education has more to do with providing income for government union members than it has to do with educational outcomes.
