  2. How much of this improved safety situation, though, is the result of government mandates?

    I'm all for safer vehicles, so long as that's what the free market demands. I'm not sure that's what has happened here, though.

  3. Michael, the automakers have been studying and advancing crash safety long before the US government copied SAE regulations and took control. They attempted to sell safety on and off for decades before it finally stuck. The media and schools will not tell people about the work that goes all the way back to Henry Ford. They will not tell people where the government got a fully formed set of standards from.

    Unowned, the IIHS uses government to advance the interests of the insurance companies. They were proponents of the 55mph NMSL (which allowed insurance companies to surcharge safe drivers) just as an example. The IIHS has been an enemy of auto enthusiasts for decades.
