Mainstream science seems to have concluded that solar activity has no "direct relationship" on earthquakes (http://www.usgs.gov/blogs/features/usgs_top_story/does-solar-activity-cause-earthquakes/).
Readers of EPJ are aware that things mainstream can be lacking. There is some interesting research indicating connections between solar activity with earthquakes (and other phenomena on earth). There has been an increase in solar activity over the past few days, including an M6 flare (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_flare#Classification) in correlation with the earthquakes in Japan and Ecuador.
Here is an interesting presentation by Dr. Kongpop U-yen "Evidences of Space Weather Induced Natural Disasters" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8EE0p9kx5o)
