If He Could, Roubini Would Take Lessons from Schumpeter on How To Be a Great Lover

He tells FT:

A: Joseph Schumpeter, an Austrian economist who – as a true Renaissance man – argued that his three goals in life were to be the best economist, the best horseback rider and the best lover of his generation. He claims he achieved only two of them: I would ask him which and for good practical tips to achieve such goals.

Was Nouriel Roubini Tagged Teamed by Two of the Russian Spies?

I have already reported on alleged Russian spy, Anna Chapman, who befriended Nouriel Roubini on Facebook.  The hard partying Roubini acknowledges that he may have met Chapman in a social setting, but does not recall any one on one conversation with her.

Another connection Roubini may have to the alleged spies is with the alleged Russian spy "Cynthia Murphy". According to NyPo, Moscow ordered her to develop "ties w/ classmates on daily basis incl. professors."

"Report to C[enter] on their detailed personal data and character traits w. preliminary conclusions about their potential (vulnerability) to be recruited by Service," her controls wrote.

Murphy earned an  MBA at Columbia, but most intriguing she also has a bachelor's degree in finance from NYU's Leonard Stern School of Business in 2000 and an NYU associate's degree in 1997.

Roubini has taught at NYU's Leonard Stern School of Business since 1995.

Long before this spy scandal broke, I emphasised that Roubini is one of the most connected economists in the profession. He's close to Larry Summers, Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke. He also is a consultant to several central banks. If I was to draw up a list of financial targets to gain inside information from, Roubini would probably be at the top of the list. His enjoyment of the night life, would make him an even more interesting target--as someone easy to run into.

Roubini has not responded to my email asking him:

1. The alleged Russian spy "Cynthia Murphy" received a bachelor's degree in finance from NYU's Leonard Stern School of Business in 2000. By any chance do you recall her? Is it possible she took one of your courses?

2. Anything interesting about the way you got invited to [Russsain oligarch] Roman Abramovich's New Year's Eve party?

Roubini: I Never Had One on One with the Russian Spy

FT has the details:

Turns out erstwhile über-bear — and sometime ladies’ man – Nouriel Roubini was casually acquainted with Ms Anna Chapman, one of the 10 alleged Russian spies arrested in the US. Chapman, it seems, cut a somewhat glamorous swathe through the New York social scene, and, according to Roubini, the two “may” have met socially at a couple of parties, with Chapman befriending him on Facebook.

But, Roubini says he never had a “one to one conversation or meeting with her.”

HOT RUMOR: Roubini and The Russian Spy

This totally unsubstantiated rumor comes courtesy of Dealbreaker. The only reason it makes a tiny bit of sense is that:

A. As I have pointed out many times, Nouriel Roubini is the most connected economist in the world. On New Year's eve, he was photographed partying at Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich's party, where he could have possibly met alleged Russian spy Anna Chapman.

B. He is a consultant to most of the central banks in the world. He is as tied in as they get, a great target for spies. And Roubini would easily fall for the charms of alleged Russian spy Anna Chapman (pictured above).

Guess Who Came To Nouriel Roubini's Christmas Party?

Nouriel Roubini had his holiday party Tuesday night and it was a riot.

RDV in the Meatpacking district of Manhattan was packed with young finance-types and their hot moms and everyone was enjoying the open bar, the loud (surprisingly pop-y) beats, and scoping out the high-profile types who were floating around.

We could only ID one of them, but there were around six graying men there who stood out because almost everyone else was young.

The big showing was Donald Trump. He and Melania joined the festivities around eleven, just as the open bar was closing. They brought a friendly bodyguard who only jumped in the way a few times when we tried to snap candids.

Forget exams, reports etc. Just introduce your mother to Roubini. Courtney Comstock reports:

At one speaking engagement last spring, a woman told Roubini that her son would be taking one of his fall classes at NYU.

"If he has the good genes of a bright woman like you," he told her, "of course he deserves an A."

Roubini Crashes In on Babe Magnet Oliver Stone

Here's economist Nouriel Roubini, aka Dr Doom, at a party last night in Manhattan, along with a sloshed Oliver Stone.

I am not impressed. Not only am I better forecaster than Roubini, but when I partied sometime back with a semi-sloshed Oliver Stone at Asia de Cuba in Hollywood's Mondrian Hotel, I actually had a seat, and there were eight girls, not four. And they were all smiling, not like the two in the foreground, here, who look somewhere between bored and scared out of their wits.

Now NYT reports that for the sequel to the movie Wall Street:

Earlier in the summer [Oliver Stone] brought Mr. LaBeouf [Who will paly a key role in the movie] to a cocktail party organized by Nouriel Roubini, a New York University economics professor and chairman of a consulting firm, and held in rented space at the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea. There Mr. Stone and Mr. LaBeouf discussed the financial collapse with hedge fund managers who are clients of Mr. Roubini’s firm...Mr. Stone offered Mr. Roubini a small role in the film as a hedge fund manager

Who Is Nouriel Roubini Hanging Out with This Week?

The man who can claim the pre-White House Larry Summers as an advisor and silent partner, Nouriel Roubini, is on the shores of Lake Como in Italy.

He spoke there at the Ambrosetti Workshop. According to Ambrose Evans-Pritchard, the Workshop is "a sort of Davos/Bliderberg for food-loving policy elites....at the Villa D’Este (an ultra-posh hotel on the lake)"

Roubini said that the best we can hope for is a long-hard slog for two or three years, with a rising risk of a double dip into “W-shaped” recession. I'm really not entirely sure how Roubini reaches his conclusions (I think he is a data dog), but it is right in line with the thinking here at EPJ.

Beach Economics and the Nouriel Roubini Meltdown

It's not clear to me that the economy will crash, but Nourel Roubini certainly has.

Nick Denton at Gawker published an email Roubini sent to a female, inviting her to get together with him in St Tropez, NYC or wherever.

He advises in the email that he is in St Tropez studying, ha ha, "Beach Economics".

He drops these facts in the email:

I am in decadent St Trop now vacationing with Arab Sheiks, Russian oligarchs and assorted aristocratic Euro trash. More silicon here than in Silicon Valley...lol

This coming Sunday August 17th the New York Times Magazine (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/magazine/index.html) will publish a long profile article (4 pages and 3000 words) about me. So beware of markets shivering the next day.

The publishing of this email and accompanying commentary by Denton sent Roubini on a 2:00 AM tirade on Denton's Facebook page that has to be read to be believed. Roubni, an Iranian Jew, calls Denton am anti-semite with a Nazi mind and a McCarthist bigot. Nobel Prize quality, it is not. Classy, it is not. A sign the man may have had a bit too much from the bottle? Very, very possible. And which also leads to the BIG question posed by Felix Salmon, "I wonder if Nouriel knows that Nick is Jewish."

And, we thought only his economics was nuts.
