A Further Note on Anonymous Commenting

I have received a few emails from readers that indicate that the platform I use, Blogger, is not allowing them to post using a Google account or otherwise--and some just don't want to leave an electronic tag. Thus, I will turn the anonymous commenting capability back on. However, I urge every one to use the tab bar and instead of clicking anonymous, click on name/url, you don't have to add a url, just a name---any name, a nom des comments. Use the name consistently over your comments and you may get a following, and all EPJ readers will get a sense for your thinking over different posts.

  1. I'm glad you turned it back on as well. I was figuring I would just stop posting comments here.

Quite frankly, I don't want readers to be able to "get a sense of my thinking over different posts." The libertarian community is vicious for "eating its own," and we're still small enough that it's not all that difficult to figure out who someone is if they use the same nom de guerre for numerous posts. Anonymity gives me the freedom to say things without having to deal with the bullshit.

As far as continuity for a thread, who gives a shit? Either the argument makes sense or it doesn't. It doesn't matter if the argument is made by one or more persons.

    1. I agree with you on this. I do, however, now know you as the guy who uses the word "shit" casually.

  4. I find the anonymous feature annoying, because I can't tell if it is the same person posting five times or if it is five different people posting. I am not saying EPJ should get rid of it, but it would be nice to be able to tell whether certain anonymous posts are by the same person.

  5. While you're at it, can you fix the "comments" links to go to #comments instead of #comment-form?

  6. Thanks! I'd also like to see moderation disabled so our comments appear right away. It allows for a better discussion.

Experiment with that if you would. If there is too much spam or unacceptable comments, you can put it back on moderation.

  7. Myself, I LOVE the ability to be known as "Capn Mike" in my Austrian 'verse, yet be completely anonymous as to my true "legal" identity.
I use the same i.d. on basically ALL the Austrian affiliates.
It's a great way for folks to "short-cut" discussions with me because they already have a "back-story" as to where I'm coming from.
    And I'm still technically "anonymous".
Best of all worlds. So why "anonymous"??

  8. Hey Bob, some people have pictures and the like with their profiles, must I have open id or google to do that? I'm a regular poster/reader or this site & would happily add a picture/profile with my posts

  9. Let's hear it for those who do not feel the need to hide behind "anonymous" or even a pseudonym: Mises, Bastiat, Rothbard, Rockwell, Schiff, Woods, Vance, Salerno, Block, [many more], and, last but not least, Wenzel. Huzzah!

    1. It's not about hiding. It's about letting your arguments stand on their own -- devoid of any personalities.

I have no Austrian-economic "street cred." Therefore, my name is of no added value, and to those who use a fallacious appeal to authority, my name can detract from the argument.
