Obama Says Iraq Airstrike Effort Could Be ‘Long Term’

The Empire and its troubles.

President Obama sought to prepare Americans for an extended presence in the skies over Iraq, reports NYT, telling reporters on Saturday that the airstrikes he ordered this week could go on for months as Iraqis try to build a new government.

“I don’t think we’re going to solve this problem in weeks,” Mr. Obama said before leaving for a two-week vacation on Martha’s Vineyard. “This is going to be a long-term project.”

  1. "This is going to be a long-term project.”

The US has been meddling in Iraq for decades. The CIA paved the way for Hussein's rule, supported him in his fight against Iran in the 80's, invaded in 1990, maintained a no fly zone over the country during the clinton years and then invaded and occupied the country in 2003 up till recently. A generation has passed along with all of the bombings, invasions, embargoes, and the place is far worse than it was before the mayhem from DC was unleashed.

    1. Indeed. But the unspoken truth is that they don't really want a clean resolution to these problems, as it undermines the rationale for ongoing funding of the warfare state.

A peaceful world means Pentagon budgets dry up. What would Boeing and GE do for revenue?
